Today's NewWork News Web Tip: G8 Information Centre (Saturday, 9/5/98)
Quick! Which country was added recently to make the G7 into the G8? If you said "Russia," you're the latest recipient of the coveted NewWork News handshake award. Now, wait a minute--this is an organization of the world's largest industrial economies, right? So, why is Russia included, given that its economy has been on the rocks lately and is even showing signs of de-industrialization? It's because the world worries about Russia and the fact that it still has thousands of nuclear missiles. The world has a strong stake in the longer-term success of Russia's economy and hopes that it will one day grow into one of the largest industrial economies, with its fledgling democracy intact and thriving, of course. If you'd like information on anything having to with the G8, here's the G8 Information Centre from the University of Toronto.

Today's NewWork News Web Tip: World Village Project (Sunday, 9/6/98)
There were about 1 billion persons on earth in 1840, about 3 billion in 1960, and there are about 6 billion now. Total population alone presents human beings with life circumstances that are fundamentally different from those faced by nearly all homo sapiens sapiens during our 40,000 to 60,000-year history on this planet. Want additional perspective? The World Village Project has worked out some interesting percentages. Suppose total world population were reduced to a village of 1,000 persons, but with all existing ratios left intact. About 200 of those 1,000 persons would control 75% of the world's wealth, for instance, and another 200 would control two percent. Also, of those 1,000 persons, fewer than 10 would have a college education. Among other things, it means that the new global economy isn't really global, if the majority of humanity remains excluded. Enormous numbers of people will never make a telephone call, let alone use a computer.
