Today's NewWork News Web Tip: Fortune 500 (Monday, 4/1/02)
Here's the latest list of the 500 largest American industrial corporations in terms of annual revenues from Fortune magazine. As you will see, a well-known retailer is now the largest, "so help me Sam." In fact, Wal-Mart, the company that Sam Walton created, is now the largest corporation in the world as well.

In the "ain't life strange" department, you may be interested to know that Enron, number 7 on the Fortune list last year, is number 5 this year. However, if you check the Enron details page, under "profits" you will see "NA," which may mean "not applicable" or "not available," or, with painful accuracy, "not any," and that's an understatement.

Incidentally, in addition to demonstrating that accounting can be a creative line of work after all, it's important to note that Enron's position on the latest list is a consequence of Fortune's extrapolating the annualized data from those available for the first three quarters of 2001, ending September 30 last year, which is before all the Enron stuff hit the fan.
