Today's NewWork News Web Tip: China National Tourist Office (Thursday, 12/9/04)
While a growing number of Chinese tourists are scattering over much of the world, China remains a major tourist destination for Americans and Europeans, as well as other people who bring their coveted hard currencies with them. The China National Tourist Office is a large, finely-tuned organization dedicated to persuading you to visit China while also doing its best to make sure that you have a very good time. Mao once remarked that power comes from the barrel of a gun, but no one should underestimate the power of friendly, pleasurable relationships on a daily basis.
Former British Prime Minister John Major has talked much about how, after centuries of wars between the two countries, the thought of England and France going to war against each other now is inconceivable. He believes that a major reason has to do with trade and tourism. When countries are connected daily by large numbers of mutually-beneficial individual and organizational relationships, they typically don't go to war with one another, particularly if they're both democracies.
While China certainly isn't a democracy at this point, Taiwan has become increasingly democratic in recent years (and, so as not to offend mainland Chinese officials, we'll avoid the temptation to refer to Taiwan as a country), the world certainly has been holding its breath while waiting to see if commerce and tourism will defuse a perennially dangerous situation in that part of the world. Will the mainland Chinese and the Taiwanese be able to see one another more clearly while shaking hands than through a missile sight across the Taiwan strait?

Today's NewWork News Web Tip: United Nations Human Settlements Programme (Monday, 12/20/04)
Humanity has had several thousand years of experience with cities, but, until fairly recently, a city of 50,000 people was considered very large. During very recent history, truly huge metropolitan areas have become very common throughout the world, and may be examples of how quantitative changes can result in qualitative differences for which previous experience may be largely irrelevant. As huge numbers of people gather together in close proximity, new problems arise, particularly in the developing world. Beginning in 1978, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme has attempted to prevent and help people cope effectively with some of theses problems.
